What is the Good Morning Snore Solution and how does it work?
The Good Morning Snore Solution, or GMSS, is an anti-snoring device that works by stabilizing your tongue in a forward position throughout the night.
One of the most common causes of snoring is gravity. While you sleep it pulls your tongue toward the back of your throat, obstructing your airway. Air pushes past your tongue, causing vibrations otherwise known as snoring.
Unlike many Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs) that hold your lower jaw forward to eliminate snoring, the GMSS secures your tongue in a forward position using tongue displacement technology – in other words, a suction cup. This allows air to flow freely, helping you to breathe better and eliminate snoring.
It’s simple, easy to use, and in many cases has been clinically proven to help reduce or eliminate snoring.
Developed and designed by Dr. Leslie Dort, a practicing dentist in Calgary Canada, the GMSS is FDA approved and BPA free with a consistent A- rating from the Better Business Bureau.
Many say that the GMSS bears a resemblance to a pacifier. Some refer to it as a “tongue retainer”. While it may not be the most attractive device, this one-size-fits-all product is efficient and easy to use right out of the box. There is no boiling, molding, or trimming required.
Each GMSS comes with a Polident denture tablet. To use, simply drop the tablet into a glass or bowl of cold water and soak your GMSS for approximately 10 minutes before thoroughly rinsing and drying it.
When you are ready to use the device, place it between your front teeth and lower lip, making sure that the bulb is outside of your mouth. To secure your tongue in place, squeeze the bulb and place the tip of your tongue on the device before releasing the bulb. This will create a suction cup-like effect, which will hold your tongue forward as you sleep.
If you find that the suction feels uncomfortable or too loose, you can adjust the level of suction by squeezing the bulb.
Does it actually work?
To test her product, Dr. Dort conducted a controlled study that included 32 patients. Each patient wore their GMSS one week and then used a different product the second week. She used three measurements to evaluate the effectiveness of the devices:
– Respiratory Disturbance Index, calculated by total sleep hours divided by sleep disturbances.
– Snoring Index, or the average amount of snores per hour.
– Epworth Sleepiness Scale, a measurement of “daytime sleepiness properties”.
Her findings concluded that “on average, 34 percent of subjects wearing the GMSS experienced at least a 50 percent reduction in RDI, which brought the average number of hourly sleep disturbances to fewer than 10.” Over 70 percent of participants agreed that their daytime sleepiness had improved and said that they would use their GMSS regularly due to these results.
In another study, SnoreLab used their snore management application to test the true effectiveness of the GMSS. By recording sound samples and measuring the intensity of the user’s snoring, called a Snore Score, they were able to calculate real results which indicated that the GMSS doesn’t just improve your sleep – it improves your life.
To track the results from the GMSS, SnoreLab gathered data from people who registered as GMSS users with their app. According to their results, “the average reduction in snoring intensity was even greater than is normally achieved with jaw advancement style mouthpieces.” They found that the GMSS is especially helpful for those who are overweight, going so far as to say that the “average reduction in snoring intensity (Snore Score) amongst users (BMI 25 – 30) was the greatest of any consumer remedy that we track.” However, they did find that “for people of normal body weight results are more hit-and-miss depending on the cause of the individual’s snoring.”
My Personal Experience
The GMSS is a great product in many ways. It is made of a soft, BPA-free material, which makes it more comfortable than other anti-snoring devices. I didn’t have to mold or fit it, which makes this device incredibly convenient. I also found that it was very easy to keep clean.
The GMSS really worked for my snoring, but it took a few nights to get used to. At first, I had trouble falling asleep. After the 5th night I could fall asleep without issue but most nights my GMSS seemed to get displaced and fall out of my mouth. I am not sure how long it actually stays in. I also had mild discomfort on my tongue. It wasn’t terrible but again, I am not sure how long the device stays in my mouth.
What other users have to say about their experiences with GMSS
Those who have used this product and found successful results say that it is more comfortable than any other anti-snoring device. Due to the design of the GMSS, it takes up very little space in your mouth and does not cause any gum or jaw soreness.
In addition to reducing snoring, it has also been reported to keep users from grinding their teeth.
Like myself, many users also found that the GMSS could be difficult to keep on throughout the entire night and caused mild tongue discomfort. Some reviews suggest that sleeping on your side or using a wedge-shaped pillow can help ease the mild tongue discomfort (although it’s not explicitly clear how this would help), but from what I’ve read most users find that after the first three days they do not experience any soreness.
The reviews left on Yelp and other review sites are both good and bad:
“…What really blew me away was how much more alert and energetic I feel now during the day. I really had no idea how much sleep I was missing, but now I know!” – Johnny
“It interrupted my sleep (couldn’t get more than 3-4 hours of sleep with it before waking up) and my teeth and jaw hurt the next day.” – Michael K
“I felt my snoring was worse and I woke up more frequently when I sleep on my back with the GMSS. When I tried to sleep on my side I would drool heavily since the GMSS kept my mouth open.” – Sherman T
“I have been using this anti snoring device for almost a week now, and my snoring completely went away…I’ve tried many different devices and found this last one most comfortable and effective.” – Conrad
“I honestly didn’t expect it to work this quickly, but let’s just say my husband is really, really happy about this. Thank you for (REALLY) helping out my marriage!” – Janet
Who should use the GMSS?
According to some users, “this mouthpiece essentially fills a void in the world of anti-snoring solutions.” It is perfect for those who cannot use MAD’s due to dentures, weak or loose teeth, bridge-work, crowns, or those who simply find MAD’s uncomfortable. The GMSS does not rest on or apply pressure to your teeth, gums, or jaw, making it a much more comfortable option.
The GMSS does require you to breathe through your nose. If you’ve got bad allergies this device might not be ideal for you during allergy season.
As this is a one size fits all product, there is a chance that it may not be comfortable for some since it is not customized for each individual’s mouth.
How much does it cost?
When compared to similar prescription-only anti snoring devices, the GMSS is considerably less expensive. It costs $99.94. Shipping costs for this product average at about $10.00 and it is delivered within 1 – 3 weeks.
If you find that this device works for you, or know a relative or friend that is also interested in trying it, you can buy the GMSS Family Pack, which includes two GMSS devices for $129.94.
While expensive, the company does offer a 30-day money back guaranteed. Just make sure that you request a Return Authorization Number within 30 days of purchase. The manufacturer must receive your returned GMSS within 45 days from purchase or they will not provide you with a refund.
Everyone snores for different reasons. While this device does not work for every user, those who swear by it agree that it’s a small price to pay for better quality sleep and higher levels of energy.
