Practice makes perfect, or so the saying goes, and now that I had tested a few different snoring mouth guard pieces, I have become addicted, some might say obsessive in my desire to find the ultimate guard for my requirements. The next device I decided to try was the Snore Meds device. Regarding value this device steals the show, as it has the lowest price per individual unit at only $40 95 for an individual mouth guard, $56.95 for a twin pack, and $88.95 for a quadruple pack. If this device works for you, then you will have bagged yourself a bargain. However, it is always important to remember that cost is a minor factor in this situation. The priority for any and all of these devices is to stop you from snoring, enabling you and your partner to have a good night’s sleep. So let’s dig a little deeper and see if this economical product, delivers on its promises.
A MAD Device
The Snore meds product falls into the MAD category of devices. This stands for Mandibular Advancement Device, and it works by moving your lower jaw forward ever so slightly. I love testing out these claims, which normally is difficult to do when you are sound asleep, but this simple little test will demonstrate the principle quickly, easily and without any pain. For the majority of people, air being forced through an ever narrowing gap, at the top of your throat, is what causes the sound we call snoring. If we can increase the size of that gap, then the air has fewer obstructions and can pass through without any issues. Lie down on your bed, and push your lower jaw forward. While keeping that lower jaw in the same position, make a conscious effort to snore. I am almost certain you will find this impossible, and this is the perfect demonstration of how a MAD device works.
My Personal Thoughts And Opinions On This Device
The first thing to note about this device before I say anything else is that it is made from hypoallergenic thermoplastic, which is free of BPA and Latex. The product is FDA approved, which is something that I personally class as a deal breaker. Remember you will be wearing this device every night, in your mouth, while you are asleep, so it is essential that the product is safe and properly tested. As I mentioned above the price is excellent, and what I negated to mention was that there is also a customer loyalty program in place, which makes the product even cheaper.
However, that was the first thing that set my alarm bells ringing, every company needs to make a profit, and you basically have to make a choice, either charge more or use cheaper components. In my opinion, Snore Meds have definitely opted for the second option. The material feels tough and uncomfortable to wear and hold. When you take into consideration the fact that my mouth is already accustomed to wearing mouth guards, and so there is no learning curve, I just did not enjoy using this product. Now with that being said, this could be just that my mouth shape or type doesn’t blend well with the Snore Meds device, but all I can do in a review is explain my personal findings. I wanted to like this device, heck for the price I wanted to love it, but the cold hard truth was that for me I simply couldn’t wear this device on a nightly basis. Regarding achieving the goal, the device performed reasonably well. My wife said that she got a good night’s sleep and that I guess, is the desired outcome. But I dreaded wearing that mouthpiece every night, and if I am honest, I would have accidentally on purpose forgot to wear it, left to my own devices. The reality is that however, effective a product is, if it is uncomfortable to wear over time, you simply will stop using it, and that is exactly what would have happened to me.
The Fitting Procedure
For those of us that wear dentures, or have ever had a mold taken for a crown, you will have some sort of idea of the fitting process. In essence, you heat the mouth piece up using boiling water, then when it has become soft and pliable, you bit down on it, while pushing your lower jaw forward a little bit. Once you are certain that the mouthpiece is secure and fits you properly simply remove it, and place it in a cold cup or water to set. The company itself states on the website that the effectiveness of the product depends on how well you the user perform this process. Unlike some of the competition in these reviews, there is no other way to adjust the device. Personally, I feel that this system builds in way too much chance of operator error, the customer is paying for a professional device, and yet that same customer has to fit it perfectly themselves, the first time. Yes, they do provide a reasonable quality YouTube demonstration, but to me, that is an obvious sign of where they have tried to cut back on quality.
It has occurred to me that if I had tested this device in isolation, and had nothing else to compare it with, then perhaps I wouldn’t have been quite so hard on this product. Quality is a subjective factor, and I have no doubt that many people find this device both excellent, and top quality. However, rightly or wrongly I can only give my impressions, and I am unable to judge this product on its own. In my opinion, this is a poorly made, product, that has been designed to a budget. The lack of quality is quite apparent, and although manufactured with the lifespan of one year, I find it particularly telling that the company itself recommends changing the device ever three to four months. For me, this removes the number one benefit this product had as if you have to buy four of them a year, then the value is not quite there, and in my opinion, you would be better advised to spend a little more upfront but get a longer lasting product of higher quality. The product does come with a generous 45-day money back guarantee, which at least gives you the customer, the chance to evaluate it fully in the comfort of your own home. At such a relatively cheap initial outlay, and with the 45-day peace of mind, you might find that this product perfectly suits your needs.
Cleaning And Maintenance
First and foremost, these devices spend an average of eight hours out of every twenty-four in your mouth. Proper cleaning is essential, and this is actually one area where I feel the Snore Meds device scores quite well. As a part of the molding procedure, the guard is supplied with a spatula, which enables the user to hold the device safely and securely. This same spatula can be used to hold the guard for cleaning purposes, which actually makes the procedure easier to accomplish, and in my opinion results in a more thorough clean. The spatula works by clicking into a small hole at the front of the mouthpiece, effectively creating a handle. You then can use a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean it, or if you prefer an easier alternative, you could just drop it in a glass of water with a denture cleaning product. Once cleaned the device is supplied with a sturdy storage holder, which can also be utilized for travel purposes.
Summary of SnoreMeds Mouthpiece
If you have read through this entire review, you will most likely know where I am going with this summary. In isolation, I don’t think that this is a particularly bad product. For me personally, it did decrease my snoring and ensured my wife had a good night’s sleep. But it was uncomfortable to wear, didn’t ever really fit properly and apart from the initial boil and bite option, which relies totally on the user, there is no option for later adjustment, so it is totally reliant on you getting it right first time.
That being said, the product is only $40.95 and comes with an impressive 45-day money back guarantee, effectively removing the risk from the buyer totally. Considering that it actually did perform the job it was tasked with, I cannot really criticize it too much, as it does exactly what it says on the tin. However, there is a huge different between driving a BMW and a Tractor. Sure they both get you from A to B, but one provides the user with a much more enjoyable experience. If money is tight, and you want to try this product, I wouldn’t totally discourage you, with the money back guarantee, you have very little to lose, but personally I think there are better alternatives on the market.
